Lightning Premiership Basketball

Lightning Prem Basketball

On Wednesday 11th of March, 23 students from the LGs participated in Lightning Premiership basketball at Lara Lake Primary. There were two boy teams and also one girl team. We played teams from Lara Lake, Rollins and Northern Bay.

We all tried our best all day. The girls team won every game and got through to the next level which is in Term 4. The boys ‘A’ team also won every game and made it to the next level. Everyone had a great day whilst also trying their best and showing great sportsmanship!

Book Fair

DLG with the Very Cranky Bear

...and a Visit From a Very Cranky Bear!

But don't worry, he wasn't vicious. You'd be cranky too if you were as hot and sweaty as him!

This week we've had the Book Fair come to town and it will be here until next Monday (23/3). Classes will be visiting the fair and creating a wish list of books that they might like. Books and stationary will be available for purchace before and after school. There's plenty of good stuff for all ages!
To help celebrate the event, classes were visited by the literary celebrity himself, The Very Cranky Bear, and his very capable minder, Callan.

The LG Blog is Back!

The year has well and truly got off to a busy start in the LG building and there's going to be plenty more to keep us moving throughout the year!

This blog will be a place where you can keep up to date on the latest news as well as check for upcoming dates and events. You can also find links to some useful websites for games and activities for Maths, Spelling and Reading.

So far this year we've had heaps of fun getting to know our classmates and settling into class routines. We're really getting stuck into our learning and here's what we're doing in different learning areas:

Reading: We're focusing on reading accurately and fluently. The kids have been choosing 'just right' books that are challenging but not too hard and not too easy.

Writing: We've been building our descriptive writing techniques to create some stupendously and outrageously brilliant images for our audience. Soon we will be putting our skills to further use with narrative writing.

Maths: We've been exploring our place value system to explore how numbers are constructed and get our heads around some really, really large numbers and then extending this to look at some really, really small numbers and how decimals work. We've also been playing some great games to practice our mental computation skills.
Try these links to practice at home:

Wishball - Thousandths             MathPlayground                     Mathletics

Inquiry: We're investigating "The Story of Australia". Looking at what events and people have shaped Australia into the nation that it is today.

Remember to check in at the blog often for more info on what's been happening and what's coming up in the LGs!

Our Outstanding Debaters Move Into the Finals!

Congratualtions to both of our debating teams for winning all of their debates in their zones. Lara B was the only team in their zone to achieve this and so have automatically moved to the inter-zone final (date to be advised). Well done!

Lara A will compete with Geelong College this Wednesday afternoon to decide the winner of their zone as both teams won all of their debates. If they are successful they will also move to the inter-zone final.

If these teams win in their inter-zone final they will move to the grand final! (It's possible that they may compete against each other!)

Good luck and well done!

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!
Congratulations to the Lara A team for their success in their intra-zone final. An exrta well done goes to Annie for her best speaker award. They now progress to the inter-zone final against...Lara B! So Lara A will be debating with Lara B in a couple of weeks (date and time to be confirmed) for a spot in the competition Grand Final! This means that at least one of our teams will make it through to the final round! Great effort guys!

Term 4 in the LG Building

Term 4 is shaping up to be massive in the LG building! We have plenty of fun and busy events to look forward to and heaps of things to get done before the Year Sixes move on to secondary school and our Year Fives take over as our school leaders.

Some highlights will include:

- Competing in our chosen sports against other schools in the Summer Lightning Premiership (Wednesday 29th of October).

- Busting some moves with students from other schools at the Blue Light Disco run by Victoria Police (Wednesday 19th of November).

- Preparing and practicing for our Year Six Graduation performance (Thursday night, 18th of December).

- Orientation and transition for Grade Sixes as they prepare to move to their new secondary schools.

- Year 5 students will go through the process of applying for and voting for 2015 school captains.

- Visiting other classrooms and learning new skills as part of our procedural writing rotations.

Wow! It might seem like a lot to get done and things might seem very busy, but that's what we love about life in the LG Building.

Stay tuned for more details of upcomming events and for photos and reports of events as they occur.

WLG and 1/2J Buddies

WLG and 1/2J were assigned to be buddy grades for 2014

In “Buddies” we like to share our I.C.T knowledge with one another. The LG’s are kind and helpful because they share their tablets with 1/2J.
We do loads of activities with the tablets from mathematical games to sharing our class events.

The Buddies have learnt a lot from their older buddies. We also have fun by looking at our “Country and Western” assembly videos and making a poster for our portfolio together.

We have really enjoyed Buddies and we love having a Buddy session fortnightly.
